What’s the difference between a mesa and a butte?
You can ponder that question from the new and only hotel in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.
The View Hotel, owned and operated by a Navajo family, overlooks the famed red-rock valley with postcard views of the iconic “Mitten” buttes. The hotel sits in Arizona right near the Utah border. Each of the 90 rooms will have balconies that overlook rust-colored sandstone skyscrapers and mesas, made famous by more than half a dozen classic western flicks. From the hotel, you can venture out on one of two self-guided hikes around the buttes or charter a jeep excursion into tribal land.
For decades, Goulding’s Lodge in Utah, just outside the tribal land boundary, has been the only show in town when it comes to valley lodging. Rates at the new hotel, which opens in September, will run between $180 and $200 per night, double occupancy, during the peak tourist season of April through October.
