New Disney museum in San Francisco will be all about Walt

Walt Disney and Ken Annakin

It’s not a theme park, but it does bear the name Disney.

A new museum about the life of Walt Disney is planned to open in three buildings in San Francisco’s Presidio in the fall, but don’t expect any spinning Tea Cups or Haunted Mansion.

His daughter Diane Disney Miller said in a release: “My father’s name is probably one of the most well-known names around the world, but as the ‘brand’ or trademark has spread, for many, the man has become lost.”

The New York Times took a behind-the-scenes look at the $112-million museum in “Museum Is to Show the Human Side of a Cartoon Titan” and reports that it will include “personal items (home movies never shown before) to ‘Steamboat Willie’ animation cels. Other items include drawings and cartoons he made, early drawings of Mickey Mouse.

The Presidio, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is the current site of the Walt Disney Family Foundation’s collections and offices; the museum will be an expansion of those facilities.

Tickets (cost to be determined) are to go on sale Aug. 1 at www.waltdisney.org (which is still under construction).
