Mt. Waterman ski resort’s weekend schedule

Mt. Waterman skiers in February 2008Local skiers were effusive last Saturday when Mt. Waterman, the oldest ski resort in Southern California, opened after being shut for about five years.

With a bounty of snow this season, the resort is now attempting to establish a regular operating schedule, according to an e-blast from spokesman Roberto Martinez.

Mt. Waterman will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The owners are hoping to find three ski patrollers to staff the mountain so they can open during the week.

Ski lessons (though you can’t rent skis on the mountain) are starting at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each weekend day. Group ski or snowboard lessons are $30 per hour; private lessons are $75 an hour for the first person, $25 for each additional one-hour lesson. Minimum age for lessons is 6.

If you’re heading to Mt. Waterman on Sunday, you might want to get an early start. The last leg of the 650-mile Amgen Tour of California will close Highway 2 — Mt. Waterman is 34 miles north of the 210 Freeway on Highway 2 — some time in the early afternoon as cyclists pedal through.
