Monterey: Victorian Inn’s ‘Fish, Farm & Flix’ package

Exploring Earthbound Farm

Best Western Victorian Inn in Monterey is offering a particularly unique family-oriented package this fall. With components ranging from an IMAX film to a tour of an organic farm, the ready-made getaway seems fit to please parents and kids alike.

Deal: For rates starting at $379 (pre-tax), a family of two adults and two children receives two nights’ accommodations, tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a farmer-led walk at organic Earthbound Farm; and tickets for the Cannery Row IMAX Theatre. At the hotel, you’ll receive breakfast each morning and will be invited to a wine-and-cheese reception in the afternoons.

While the aquarium (which, on a side note, released a great white shark last month) is a must-do for any first-time Monterey visitor and IMAX flicks are fun anytime and any place, Earthbound Farm is perhaps the most surprising attraction in this package. The 30-acre site in Carmel Valley welcomes visitors, especially on Saturdays, when workshops, walks and more are offered. Children might be keen to explore a special kids’ garden, with plants they can touch. There is also a “cut-your-own” herb garden in the farm stand area and a chamomile-aromatherapy walking labyrinth. Book online or over the phone.

When: This deal is valid for stays now through Nov. 30, 2008. The package is available any part of the week, but you’ll want to include a Saturday stay — and soon — if you want to do the farm walk, which is scheduled only on Saturdays through the end of this month. However, whichever day you go, you should find plenty to see and explore, since the farm stand is open daily, year round.

Connect/disconnect: Throughout the hotel, you can access free, high-speed wireless Internet.
