Money for travelers: get bumped, rent a hybrid; SoCal fishing

A catch of fish at Paradise Cove along Lake Isabella

Good morning travelers! We’re getting closer to the weekend. Definitely close enough to start thinking about it. What are you doing this weekend?

BIRTHDAYS | Yesterday we said happy birthday to Pope Benedict XVI as well as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Today Tom Swick lets us know that Isak Dinesen was born on this day in 1885. We should celebrate by watching “Out of Africa.”

AIRLINES | Did you hear that more airlines are canceling flights? I hadn’t heard of the regional carrier Trans States Airlines until Los Angeles Times Staff Writer Mary Forgione wrote up the news in the blog post “United Express and other regional carriers cancel flights.”

MONEY FOR TRAVELERS| Next month will be a good month to get bumped. A new federal rule goes into effect that will allow air passengers to be eligible to receive as much as $800 for being bumped. Do you think that’s enough? Weigh in on the message boards.

In other money for travelers news, Upgrade Travel Better lets us know that San Francisco will soon offer a $15 refund to customers who rent a hybrid at the airport.

FISHING GETAWAY | Los Angeles Times Staff Writer Hugo Martín reviews 10 Kern River destinations for anglers.
