Mirage Volcano 2.0: webcam, blog, Facebook and a trip giveaway

Mirage volcano rendering

Have you noticed that the Mirage Volcano hasn’t flared up in a while? Some Vegas-goers are so gambling-centric, club-centric, buffet-centric, strip club-centric, Cirque-du-Soleil-centric that they might not have even noticed that the Strip icon went dark on Feb. 5. But If you thought that the famed fiery event was going the way of the white tigers, think again. It’s getting modernized and tricked out, so you can rest assured the improved volcano will be heading toward the limelight. Like all new shiny toys, it’s got a full-on Web presence, complete with a blog, webcam and Facebook page.

Upgrades | WET — a design firm best-known in Vegas for building the Bellagio fountains — has been hired for the volcano transformation, which is costing about $25 million. There will be 120 choreographed FireShooters, flames and fireballs shooting 12 to 15 feet into the air, steam pouring out the sides of the volcano, fire igniting from the volcano’s crags and water shooting 120 feet out of the volcano’s cone - 50 feet higher than the previous one. Expect a Giant FireShooter to erupt 60 feet into the air, all adding to a show that will last twice as long as the previous incarnation. The new show also will boast some star presence behind the musical score. The soundtrack is being composed by legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and Indian tabla notable Zakir Hussain.

When | The new volcano is set to erupt Dec. 8, 2008.

Mirage Volcano 2.0 | Don’t wait until December to see it. Follow the construction progress on the Mirage’s volcano blog, check out the construction webcam and add your own Mirage Volcano memories on their Facebook page.

Darn! I will be in Las Vegas for the Luxury Travel Expo Dec. 2-5.
I guess I will have to be satisfied with a visit to the Mirage Volcano blog.

Some how it is just not the same.
