Be my guide: Crowd marks Michael Jackson’s death at Motown Museum in Detroit
The music of Michael Jackson blared from car stereos tonight on Grand Boulevard in Detroit as a gathering formed in front of the Motown Historical Museum to commemorate the superstar.
Dozens of people were laughing, dancing and singing along to Jackson songs at the birthplace of Motown Records just a few hours after the Los Angeles Times confirmed that Jackson had died suddenly at age 50 after collapsing at his Los Angeles home. Instead of tears, the music icon inspired celebration among this crowd in Detroit, where the pop idol recorded his early hit records with the Jackson 5.
“As tragic as it is, it’s nice to see all these people out here mourning the loss,” said Zack Herman, who drove half an hour from his suburban home outside of Detroit. “He defined what it was to be a true musician.”
The museum closed at 6 p.m. today, but shortly after, many locals convened on the front lawn to pay tribute. Some laid flowers on the steps; others said they planned to light candles in Jackson’s memory.
“That just shows you the power of Michael Jackson,” said Richard Wilks, who lives nearby.
Motown Records celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and Jackson was one of its biggest stars.
“He means everything to the city of Detroit,” said Michael Dates, an area resident who drove to the museum shortly after hearing the news. “This was the springboard for him to become big.”
Many at the museum described their first reaction to Jackson’s death as “shock.” The singer was a cornerstone of Detroit’s history, and many residents said they couldn’t remember a time in their lives without the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson’s classic solo albums such as “Off the Wall.”
“He was always just there,” said Andrew Rogers, who drove south into the city from Royal Oak, Mich. “I didn’t realize what it meant until he went away.”
Lingering questions about Jackson’s alleged sexual misconduct and other controversies were overshadowed tonight by a jubilee honoring the happiness his music brought to these people.
You could certainly feel the love in Detroit as folks couldn’t help but smile when reminiscing about childhood memories of listening to Jackson records.
“My favorite video was ‘Thriller,’ and I used to try to mock him dancing,” said Detroit resident Anita Moton. “I can’t believe that he’s gone.”

He was loved by all but not just blacks. Had he not been exploited by black leadership he would have realized we ALL loved him. His desire to look white was not the fault of whites but blacks who told gave him excuses that whites would love him more if he werent black looking…exploiting racism. NOOOOO this is not the truth. Whether you believe the hype or the accusations over the man’s life in recent times or not, is not the issue.
He shaped the world’s look on music, in all its various forms, his talent for seeing through the eyes
of a child, with wonderment is a testament to whom he was, in his death millions will mourn the loss,
he should be admired for his talent and for his innovation. Through this man we all learned to see the world
as a wonderous place, even in the darker sides of life and love. To his family I mourn the loss of

Am in shock about MJ.I am in India and jut couldn’t stop crying and then I questioned God–why im and not politician like Bush whoc ommitted genocide bot physical and financial during their term.

No matter what his personal life was about, which we the public only are given snippets of, fair or unfair (I for one lean towards the latter), what matters is what he did for those of us who were his public, his music, incredible beyond anything we’ve known. He was indeed so talented that it boggled the mind and senses. I wish to say “I’m so very sorry for your loss” to his family who really knows of their son and brothers personal life. He shall be missed and his music and what he has given to the music industry will always live on. The tragedy is he is gone but never forgotten.

Michael said he suffered his whole life from self-identity issues from emotional abuse from his father and pressures by the public - the WHITE media. Blacks were happy and proud with the way his was and were universally dismayed by his radical change in appearance, rejecting his blackness. Get a clue.

to tell the truth i dont think who ever was talking to the firedepartment on the phone should have been on the phone if he just got there why wasnt the doctor on the phone answering the question if he was right there how long was the other guy there before the called 911 the doctor she have called 911 right away when he knew something was wrong when michael didnt respond to cpr right away he should have called 911 then.I will alaways keep michael in my heart an always remember him my love goes out to janet,toya,there mom an michaels kids dont worry hes watching over yall now.

What a Sad and Tragic Event!!
Michael came along during the Baby Boomer Era as I did. I have always loved his style, dance and music. He is one of the most incredibly talented humans in the world! Michael will truly be missed. I just wish that anyone who saw his health, of body frame dwindling…should have urged him to to make reasonably change in his life. I’m so sure that he has been WELCOMED in Heaven. God and the Angels have a special someone there with them now.

The world will morn his passing and it is only when they are gone that you realise how much he gave us. I really recommend looking at his wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson or even listening to it http://www.abc2mp3.com/user_audio.php?user=837 as it is over an hours read. It follows his high and lows and I realised that anyone under about 35 missed so much of his early stuff.

Elvis…the Beattles…please…did Elvis start performing professionally at 8yo? Did the Beattles set trends in music, music videos, dance(2 words — robot and moonwalk) and fashion? Did either one of them have as many hits (from a single album nontheless). Who has the highest selling album of all time? This man was truly special…and yes, the GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED period. People (the media) want to focus on the trouble he had. I can’t stand people who judge others as if theyre underwear is spotless. I don’t even “see” those idiots. I look at all that Michael gave to the world. The 1st record that I ever bought(I was 6yo in 1971)was a 45 single of “I Want You Back” (B side was “Mamas Pearl”). From the time I 1st saw him on TV I wanted to dance and sing just like him. Michael the very first time i met u was in the radio station i worked at as a radio reearch director.the guys there kept it quiet that u were coming in to book dates for some concerts in our town..as they knew i ADORED U! so sitting at my desk doing boring paper work u walked in by urself right up to my desk and didnt say a word.o looked up and there u were and at first i thought i was having a unatural so real DAY DREAM.when i realized i wasnt i started to hyperventilate especially when u said hi and held out ur hand to take mine and shake it.I BARELY could speak and i was shaking like a leaf in a hurricane.when i found my senses i ran around to where u were standing and hugged u so tightly and now i wish that hug could have lasted forever. u were always an idol to me even thru ur trials and tribulations my faith in u never waivered.i knew a snow job and a embezzlement scam when i seen one. Michael God took u home so u could do what u always done best here on earth …..SING AND DANCE AND BE THE REAL U ….for all who left the world b4 u did missed u and loved u too.just as much as we did.so now my dear friend SING AND DANCE for all those angels that u are with now. u are no longer under a microscope and u no longer have to worry about vicious things that people have said about u and not one of those people can ever hurt ur feelings again. Brillo, you’re wrong. The Jackson 5 recorded some of their early music in Detroit. Motown Records didn’t leave for Los Angeles until 1972.

It was a stunner to learn of Michael Jackson’s death. The newsman stated that Farrah Fawcett AND Michael Jackson had passed, I thougt it was a joke.
I was able to chase after his navigator in June of 1997. He had come back to one of his adopted home towns to promote a casino/amusement park venture then.
I still haven’t stopped crying.

Regardless of the allegations that were set against him (Even though he was found innocent!)As humans the natural inclination SHOULD be to mourn him. Even if you do not like him, think about his family. They have lost either a son, father, brother, uncle etc. HE WAS THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER EVER. Not because the colour of his skin but because he was talented. The mere fact that people from all over the world felt it necessary to speak about the sadness they felt when he died, attests to the impact he had in the music industry. Wanted to say thank you Michael, you saved my life once and didn’t know it. I was in a abusive relationship along time ago and the jerk i was with was said “depending on what song comes on the radio , will determine your fate. “You will live or die!” Luckily your song P.Y.T came on, so obviously i am alive and i thank you for saving a stranger whom you never laid eyes upon. I remember Michael,
He was my brother, he was there when I wed, when my child was born, when my parent died, and when I graduated from college. I remember hearing his voice and the comfort and charm it gave me. Yes, Michael was my brother, and as his sister I will miss him dearly. We miss you michael now and forever, Amen!

I think that the world needs to look beyond the taploids, and see that he was a gifted artist and will live on forever in his music, may he rest in peace, and my condolances to the family!! And as for the child ordeals, I just think he was a man who was living his childhood that he never had, and as we all know that nothing is fun to do alone!! People read to much into things if you ask me! And not enough of what they should pay attention too!!

I just cant believe the king is gone.When I first saw the news that Michael Jackson passed away, I just stood there with my mouth open, body felt numb.It took two mins for it to finally hit me, that’s when the tears poured out. I felt shock, I just wished it wasn’t real, even now I still can’t believe.I’ve loved Michael since I was six & I always will love him & miss him. I just wish I got a chance to meet him =[ A part of me has gone with him. R.I.P Michael Jackson I love you more <3

I have been a fan of Micheal since I first heard”Big boy” in 1968.I have always felt that he never had a childhood so he did that at Neverland. Animals and sleepovers.Carnival rides.Only in the most backward country in the world on sex would he be seen as a bad guy for what he did. Not Gulity on all trumped up charges,remember?

Michael Jackson was so very talented. We all know this and no one can take that from him. My prayers go out to his parents, siblings, and children in particular. We may have not understood him but we know he was a brilliant man and a great entertainer. From what I saw of him in the public he was a gentle soul but an unhappy person. I pray he made peace with The Lord and is finally at rest.
We need to stop judging him. Saying he did this and he took that. Like the bible says he who is without sin let him cast the first stone!

Having grew in Detroit on 12Th & Merrick St. on the West side going to Jefferson Jr. High during the 60’s. I recall when Motown was first started and what it meant to the city of Detroit the impact that it had and every where you look up groups were singing It’s a good feeling when I see the some people of Detroit dancing in front of Motown. Sure this is a sad occasion about MJ death but we must realize he has went home to be with the Lord. One day we will all answer to that bell the question is will you know the Lord as your savior?

One of my brothers has gone on to be with the Lord and will be truely missed. I have been with Michael Jackson ever since he was a child singing abc easy and 123.
We are the same age. I have watched my children mock MJ and I myself have cut a few steps. I cried for 3days and my heart and prayers go out this family.
Michael Jackson never had a real childhood and the stress of the world did not make it any better for him. I truly believe he was just tired. Michael Jackson may you rest in peace.
To the Jackson family only God can take away the pain that the family is feeling. Hold on the memories and love that Michael Jackson has given you to cherish for life.

Michael was a great performer, and brought us joy through his music. But for those of you who claim he changed your life in many ways and who get so upset by this, I pity you. he was a man, talented as he was, but a man. i am sorry your life is so dependent on a musician that you would write some of the things that write. I pray for his family, as I pray for all families who lose a loved one. But he was not worthy of anymore than another person.

Wow, when my niece called me I was in total shock. She knew what a big fan of Michael I am. I cried a minute, and then I prayed and said I know he wouldn’t of left us, if God wasn’t ready. Nomatter what the Lord has the last word. We all loved him, and will continue to love Michael, and we must accept that the Lord loved him more, and his time was up on this earth.H had so many things to worry about, and now that’s no more. R.I.P. M.J., and I hope I will see you moonwalking in heaven oneday like you did on earth. My love goes out to the Jackson family, and especially the children! Let’s forget about the negative, and think of all the good that Mike has done for this world. He ha inspired so many artist to be where they are today, and our future artist. My husband and I drove to Motown Museum about 3 months before Michael’s death. It was a surprise for my hubby who loves MJ and The Temptations. We did not know that it was Motown’s 50th Anniversary and we never imagined Michael Jackson would be gone at such a young age of 50. My family is from Gary, Ind. and 2300 Jackson Street will truly never be the same. MJ…Gone to soon!
