Mexico spring break options – peace, not parties

Mexico travel photography: Yucatan sunsetSpring break is just around the corner. If you’re one of the masses heading down to Mexico for a well-deserved, party-filled break from work or the books, you won’t be lacking options.

Certain tourist towns on the Baja California and mainland coasts offer inebriation and entertainment aplenty, catering to the college crowds.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to vacation this month or next anywhere but a mainstream spring-break locale, we are here to advise.

First tip: Skip Cabo San Lucas, and head instead to Loreto, a Gulf of California city that Times staff writer Ann Brenoff called “a deep-tissue massage for the soul.”

Following are other quiet zones, away from tequila poppers and till-dawn parties:

- In the Yucatan, Cancún might be a scene, but Bacalar offers respite among ruins.

- On the Pacific Coast, pass on Puerto Vallarta, unless you’re just stopping through on your way to sleepy San Blas.

- Other spots to consider include Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca; the “unassuming, ancient town” of Guanajuato, an hour from San Miguel de Allende; and Mexico’s Sonoran villages, where, according to L. A. Times staff writer Susan Spano, “wildlife and the old ways flourish.”

What are your favorite south-of-the-border hangouts?

You should warn your readers to stay away from Baja. Unfortunately it has become very unsafe over the last year as the drug cartel have become very aggressive. Two shoot outs in the last 6 months on the streets of Tijuana.

If readers are worried about shoot-outs, they should stay out of Los Angeles ……

Yeah, stay out of san diego because MEXICANS come up from baja pen. and kidnap americans. They’re evil, and they’re not to be trusted.
