Yelapa, Mexico - last-minute Verana deals

Verana BungalowRomantic. Sexy. Cinematic. Verana, the boutique hotel in the secluded fishing village of Yelapa (near Puerto Vallarta), Mexico, is an oasis for honeymooners and adventure-minded 9-to-5ers looking for a laid-back tropical setting to relax.

Five of the nine individual guest houses, normally priced at more than $300 per night (including tax), are marked down at least $60/day on select dates in January and February. Hurry, these deals will probably get snapped up fast.

Deal: Five of the rooms (all with ocean views) have been discounted $60 to $80 per night in January and February. Verana has a five-night minimum policy, but Verana’s last-minute specials allow those on a tighter budget to sample the hotel for fewer days.

See the specials page and consult with the Verana website to decide on which room and dates you want to travel. Meals and spa treatments are additional. Rooms cannot be booked online, but you can contact Verana and make reservations by e-mail or phone.
Caveat: Be OK with open windows, sleeping within mosquito nets and the potential threat of scorpions before you get too excited about this “paradise.”

As long as you understand that Yelapa is on the edge of the jungle and there will be “critters” in the area, you should have a wonderful experience. From my 9 visits to Yelapa in different months, the summer seems to have more bugs and the use of a mosquito net is a necessity at that time. If the last minute deals are in Jan. and Feb., I don’t think bugs will be a big problem. There are very few houses in Yelapa that have ‘glass’ windows, most are just open air. Most palapas (thatched roof houses) don’t even have full walls. Yelapa is rustic, if you’re looking for an American all-inclusive experience, this is not it. It is a Mexican pueblo where the locals live and work. They are used to tourists but you won’t see anything “American” there. The hike up to Verana is fairly far away from the town and is moderately strenous.
