Memorial Day weekend in Los Angeles: Last-minute luxe hotel deals, rooftop bars; San Diego Elephant Odyssey

The three-day Memorial Day weekend is the kind of holiday that sneaks up on you. A friend of mine told me that she only just realized she had a holiday yesterday. Don’t sweat it if you didn’t make plans to get out of town. There is plenty to do right here in and around Los Angeles — or a short jaunt away at the very least if you want to escape for the day.

Local luxe getaway | The new last-minute section of Tablet Hotels points us to some Los Angeles deals that start tonight. Rooms at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset Boulevard are marked down from $429 a night to $139 just for tonight. But it’s just a quickie — they’re sold out Saturday and Sunday. The Hollywood Roosevelt is also marked down this weekend from $429 a night to $169 a night for tonight and tomorrow and only $139 on Sunday.

A drink with a view | You don’t want any ole drink. You’d like a view to go with your mojito. The Guide takes a look at six of Los Angeles’ hottest rooftop bars, including the London Hotel (pictured).

Sunset Strip | This weekend kicks off the 6th Annual Red Sun BBQ Garden event at Katana, a crowd-pleaser Sunday nights from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. Join them on the patio deck overlooking Sunset Strip. Tip: You’ll be surprised that this sexy upscale Japanese restaurant has a $5 happy hour bar menu available all night on Sundays. Trendy Katana has the same owners as the popular Sushi Roku and BOA Steakhouse.
