Memorial Day hotel deals: Take a staycation in San Diego or Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV

It’s not too late to book a getaway for the long Memorial Day weekend (May 23-26). We understand that with the high cost of gas you might not want to travel too far. Hotwire is calling the act of booking a trip in the same city or close to home a staycation. Here are some hotel specials and sales to get you out of the house yet keep you close enough so you won’t have to sell the farm.

Which destinations will be the most popular Memorial weekend? Hotwire’s booking data says:

1. Chicago
2. Las Vegas
3. San Francisco
4. New York City
5. Seattle
6. Los Angeles

7. Washington, D.C.
8. Toronto
9. Boston
10. Orlando, Florida

San Diego | The Waterfront Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego has a “Memorial Holiday Promotion” where guests will receive the third night free. I found rates at $219 (pre-tax) per night May 24-27, 2008 (Friday night was more expensive and the deal lasts until May 29, 2008). Feel free to bring Fido; the $30 pet charge is waved with this special. Note: The third night’s rate gets deducted at checkout. If you’re traveling to San Diego before Sept. 8, 2008 ask about their “Sunshine on Sale” special that offers the fourth night free. Also, two kids (12 and under) can eat free with their parents at Lael’s restaurant or in Sally’s Seafood on the Water restaurant (both at the resort). Contact: Manchest Grand Hyatt, (800) 233-1234. NB: This deal was updated on May 14 with new info.
Hotels.com | Choose from a variety of destinations and get the third night free when you book select properties on Hotels.com. Rooms at the three-star Ridge Lake Tahoe go from $135 per night (May 23-26) to an average of $90 per night with the third night free. The total comes to $308 after taxes. In Las Vegas, it’s the Four Seasons or the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas that offer the third night free. In Los Angeles the pickings don’t look that appealing, but San Diego has Estancia and the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe included in the special. Contact: Hotels.com, (800) 346-8357.

Las Vegas | Since Hotwire knows that Vegas is a top Memorial Day destination, they’ve got three-star hotel deals for Sunday and Monday (May 25-26) for less than $50. I also found a four-star downtown hotel (Golden Nugget?) for $132 per night, pre-tax (May 23-26). Note: This price can fluctuate. I wrote this Tuesday and the price went up to $142 per when it was checked a few hours later. Today I checked again and it was back to $132. Contact: Hotwire.com, (866) 468-9473.
