Reporting from 1st L.A.-Las Vegas Megabus trip

Megabus.com bus photoLast week we let you know about the new $1 bus service from Megabus. Their service begins today and I’ll be on the 11:30a.m. route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. I paid full fare for this trip ($30.50) because I booked it this morning at the last minute. (Next week, I have a $1 fare from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.) We’ll report en route on the trip and post updates throughout the day.

10:39: Just arrived at Union Station - looking for Megabus now.

11:20: Bus stop was not easy to find. About 22 passengers and press waiting for the bus to arrive. Some passengers are antsy.

11:35: Megabus arrives! 5 min late.

11:45: We’re loaded and on the road! Sean is a nice driver full of smiles. There ended up being 15 passengers. We will take a 20 min break in Baker and are scheduled to arrive at 4:20p.m.

12:20: The bus seems new and is very clean. We’re in the carpool lane on the 605 and traffic is flowing great. A tall person with long legs would need an aisle seat but I’m fine. Since there are so many empty seats I’m going to move up a row and recline my seat so I don’t crowd the guy behind me.

12:38: On the 15 now. Going to take a nap!

1:33: 20 min break is in Barstow actually. Chow time!

1:55: Back on bus and away we go. Lots of food, gift and snacks to choose from at Barstow Station. I bought a lucky Buddha figurine. Sean confirmed this is a brand new bus.

2:50: The best part about riding the Megabus is the view. I’m sitting 4 rows from the front and am surrouded by windows + desert. Sitting this high up the expanse of the dessert is humbling. This is an entirely different experience than riding in a car. I can’t wait to take the San Diego route to see the ocean from this observaton deck on wheels!

3:32: 51 miles left! Can see Primm.

3:40: FYI - Bathroom is clean but has no sink. Wet wipes available.

4:05: Vegas, baby!

4:50: Still waiting for cab. Will be sharing taxi with 3 other passengers when it comes.
