Los Angeles Times Staff Writer Rosemary McClure took a whirlwind 24hr trip to San Francisco to test the Megabus $1 rides. Her review, “L.A.-San Francisco Megabus tour worth pinched pennies,” describes her quick taste of San Francisco cost $65 and included the round-trip bust ticket, breakfast in Union Square, a cable car ride, clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf and a trip to the new and improved Alcatraz.
Rosemary also offered this tip from Megabus President Dale Moser: The company books about 45 days in advance, he said. “So if you plan ahead and go out 45 days, you increase your probability of getting a $1 seat. As you get closer to the date you want to travel, prices increase. There are various seats at various prices. But even our top price is competitive.”
Too true. Rosemary talked to a traveler who booked the same day and paid $35 one-way.

Megabus is now apparently pulling out of the California market. The failure is probably due to a lack of advertising — I had never heard of the company until I saw a bus at the Millbrae BART station a couple weeks ago. I checked online for trips, but nothing was available it was cancelling service.
