Mediterranean Cruises: Viva Voyage fall deals

Viva Voyage has a 13-night Mediterranean cruise discounted to $699/person (Inside Stateroom) in November, but when I clicked the Travelzoo Top 20 link, it led me to two other Royal Caribbean cruise deals in the Mediterranean. After testing the deals, I found that it was cheaper for two people (including airfare) to go on a 15-night cruise to the Canary Islands, Barbados, St.Vincent, Dominica, St. Kitts, Tortola or Santo Domingo than it was to take a 12-night cruise to Italy and Croatia.

Deals: I went through the online booking procedure for two featured Mediterranean cruises, then tried to find a round-trip flight for each. Here is the price breakdown for both inside and oceanview room. All bookings with Viva Voyage include shipboard credit for $100 w/Oceanview Cabins and $50 w/inside Cabins. Airfares were cheaper when booked independently rather than going with the Viva Voyage airfare plan.

Inside stateroom/Oceanview room for two passengers including taxes:

$1,542/$1942 — 13-day Legend of the Seas cruise in Italy & Croatia, Nov. 18, 2007
(Found $956 round-trip flight to Rome/passenger including taxes on Alitalia via Kayak)
Total price for two, cruise + airfare: $3,454

$1,548/$1,948 —15-night Legend of the Seas Transatlantic Cruise, Dec. 1, 2007
(Found $765 round-trip flight to Barcelona/passenger including taxes on Alitalia via Kayak)
Total price for two, cruise + airfare: $3,078
