Ahoy, swashbucklers! Sept. 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day (TLPD). So practice your best blithering pirate-speak (”Avast!” “Arrgh!”), grab your lads and lassies, and go forth to … museums. Aye! Some, in Southern California and beyond, are worthy of your presence, and doubloons, on the day.
Up in Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is inviting visitors to dress “in their fearsome pirate best” on Friday; visitors under age 12 will get free eye patches and pirate hats upon admission. You’ll make your way through the museum with the help of a treasure map, have an opportunity to walk a plank and test your nautical knowledge with pirate trivia. A “Can Ye Talk Like a Pirate?” contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. Everyone who dresses the part gets $2 off the admission price, normally $7 for adults and $4 for children 6-17.
But we in Southern California aren’t the only sea dogs in on the fun — museums internationally are on board with the concept too. TLPD will be celebrated at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia; Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York; and other museums from Bozeman, Montana, to Wellington, New Zealand.
Update 3:32 p.m.: The original post included information on a “Pirates of the Pacific” exhibit at the San Diego Maritime Museum. A museum representative has just alerted me that the exhibit is now closed, as a main feature of the exhibit, the HMS Surprise, is being readied for a voyage at sea.
