Six Flags Magic Mountain officials confirmed plans to add a wooden roller coaster in 2009 with details on track specifications, location and theme likely to come in September.
Six Flags Chief Executive Mark Shapiro mentioned during a speech in June before the American Coaster Enthusiasts that the Valencia amusement park would be getting a Great Coasters International woodie themed to the upcoming “Terminator Salvation” movie. (Hat tip to Screamscape and CoasterBuzz.)
Opening in May 2009, “Terminator Salvation” stars Christian Bale in the fourth installment of the sci-fi franchise, directed this time by McG.
Magic Mountain has not added a new roller coaster since the flying Tatsu in 2006, opting for a $10-million upgrade to the troubled X coaster this year. Since 2006, the “extreme park” has removed the wooden Psyclone coaster, steel Flashback coaster and Freefall thrill ride.

Why a Woodie? They removed one of the worst wood coasters ever built named Psyclone and they already have Colossus. Seems like the money could be better spent somewhere else, for instance on a “Dark Ride” or on a Steel Coaster which draws the crowds? A wood coaster, now Thats so 1900’s.
Strange. Although if they do build a wood coaster that can compete with the best of the best then I will eat my words, but if it’s just “another wood coaster” I think it would be a waste of trees and money.

I 100% agree, I could see if this was one of those amazing Intamin wooden coasters that don’t require much maintence. This is going to be a GCI wooden coaster, built the same way as psyclone. It’s going to be good the first year and then with SFMM maintence it will be just as crappy as psyclone within a could of years. IMO this is a total waste of money! Also how in the heck do you theme ANY wooden coaster to Terminator??? Terminator is about robots, time travel, liquid steel futuristic stuff lol how does a coaster made of wood fit into this? this park is so lost it’s not even funny nor worth spending any money on. They claim they want to be more family friendly yet the only promotions everywhere is the stupid X2 while Thomas town is like a ghost town and unkown for as ads go. Then this a Terminator themed wooden coaster this is so ridiculous it’s sickening.

This is a joke, right? A wooden rollercoaster themed after the new Terminator movie?? LAME.

Hmm, could be interesting. I don’t know. Psyclone was TERRIBLE, and Colossus is old. If you look at the photo, it looks like it is set in the jungle. They could do some great themeing, and it could be a good ride. I think they should have used their money for a better “family” ride. Look at the Batman dark ride/coaster that opened up recently. That is a COOL ride! Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

What Six Flags needs to do is take the money they’re spending on tnis new coaster and use it to upgrade the park and make it more family friendly. Thus reducing or eliminating the criminal element that filters into that park. I’ve never seen so many metal detectors at the front of a park in my life! Get rid of the “$5 after five” Coke can deal, raise the admission prices, and restore some respectability to a once glorious amusement park. As a coaster lover, there’s no reason on earth why I should be hesitant to take my family there. Six Flags vowed to do these things after the park was saved from closing in 2003, but they didn’t. Shame on Six Flags for not fulfilling a promise.

Peter has this right on the money. Six Flags is the worst of the California parks and Disneyland is just makes six flags look like a joke. Invest the money you would spend on coasters and restore the damn park already!! Make it family friendly, clean, and entertaining. Adding crappy coasters every year isn’t going to solve their problems. I want to see an army of painters and restoration specialists fixing up the park. That would be worth visiting Six Flags again.

i have been waiting for this news for YEARS!!!! steel rollercoasters are fun, but lack character, psyclone (as stated before) was a wonderful ride untill six flags’ wooden coaster maintenance style took over, and even i wont miss it, but things are different now, i hope.. they certainly wont be making the mistakes they made with psyclone by using retarded plastic trains that dont belong on it..

A woodie?? OMG!! I’m sooo excited. I can’t wait for this ride to open. I wanna be the first one on that ride… naked. hahaha.

I loved Psyclone and miss it. I’m glad they are putting in another wooden coaster. They need one that’s designed in the twister style so that you can have a complete coaster experience at the park. Another thing they really need is to add something equivalent to Top Thrill Dragster or Kingda Ka. If they do that after this new wooden coaster is done, they might pass Cedar Point as a coaster park.

I believe none of the people above know what they are talking about. GCI is one of the most loved wooden coaster creators because of their twisted layouts, insanely banked turns, and their most famous roller coaster cars, the Millennium Flyers. I believe this is the greatest thing Magic Mountain has thought of since X. Terminator Salvation will be an amazing ride!
