Six Flags Magic Mountain officials said a family coaster with no inversions and a 48-inch height requirement is “on track” for spring 2009.
Despite rampant speculation, the themed coaster will not be a rotating Tony Hawk’s Big Spin or an indoor Dark Knight, according to officials at the Valencia amusement park.
Six Flags will debut the $7.5-million Batman-themed Dark Knight coasters this spring at three U.S. locations: Great Adventure (New Jersey), Great America (Illinois) and New England (Massachusetts).
The theme park giant unveiled the $6.5-million skateboard-themed Tony Hawk coaster last year at two locations — St. Louis (Missouri) and Fiesta Texas (San Antonio) — and will add the ride this summer at Discovery Kingdom (Vallejo, California) and Over Texas (Arlington).
Magic Mountain has not added a new roller coaster since the flying Tatsu in 2006, opting for a $10-million upgrade to the troubled X coaster this year. Since 2006, the “extreme park” has removed the wooden Psyclone coaster, steel Flashback coaster and Freefall thrill ride.
In a bid to attract deep-pocketed families, Magic Mountain plans to add a Thomas Town kiddie land in 2008. An additional kiddie land, Wiggles World, won’t come to fruition before 2010, officials said.
A location for the new Magic Mountain coaster has been selected but not made public. (Hat tips to the almighty Roller Coaster Database and the omnipresent Theme Park Review.)
What could it be? Let the speculation begin in the comments section below.

Imo this sucks! this park is to far gone to add a cookie cutter family coaster. SF INC needs to think about family rides PACKAGES! that not only include a coaster the entire family can enjoy, but other thrilling flat rides the family can enjoy together also. That is what has killed this park there is nothing else to do in the park beside ride there handful of lousey coasters. There are no up to date flat rides, shows, entertainment of any kind, It’s like a coaster graveyard imo. IMO an area like they installed at Six Flags Great Adventure called Plaza de Carnival would work much better here at Magic Mountain. It’s has a coaster, family rides, food , entertainment and is gorgeously themed and landscaped. Yet all we get over here is a tweeny coaster ploped down on a dirt lot with carboard cut outs as the theme. Wow SF Inc. great job…NOT!!!

Let’s get Wiggles World where Flashback stood, a clone of SGADV’s El Toro in Psyclone’s spot, disko coaster where Freefall stood.

lol robert, you say SFMM’s coasters are lousy? They are some of the most recognized and widest-known coasters in the world, and almost all of them break some kind of record I might add…

[...] Another new roller coaster at Magic Mountain? The theme park, desperately trying to become more family friend, will build another family-friendly roller coaster ride by the spring of 2009, reports the LA Times travel blog. That’s the second new ride planned for the park announced in recent weeks; park officials hope to add a Thomas the Train kiddie ride this year. There appears to be a lot of vacant space at the park; apparently Psyclone, Freefall, and Flashback have all been removed. Link [...]

All I will say is that I have faith in the new management and that they’ll turn the park around. It will take time; be patient.
“Lousy coasters?” I’m not sure where that came from. Sure, the park’s collection isn’t perfect, but now that the two worst ones—Flashback and Psyclone—are history, things have improved tremendously.
I think we’ll see some new wood at some point.

Be patient as well, folks, there will be new flat rides heading to the park in the next few years!

At first I was a little skeptical of Mark Shapiro and his intent with Six Flags. But now I’m a believer that maybe the park can be turned around. Notice that rides are starting to open on time a lot more, ride reliability has increased, a CSI live show has been announced. You don’t need the world’s most rollercoasters to be a great park.

Well i’d rather see a thrill coaster than a family coaster…
That means we’ll have to wait 5 more years to have a real coaster?
well 2012 maybe…
too bad !
I think Six Flags Great Adventure and Cedar Point have been better than SF Magic Mountain now !
Anyway, let’s hope they will think that x2 is not really a new coaster !
Still missing in this park a KindaKa/Top Thrill dragster style coaster, a B&M Vertical coaster would be awesome, and a new Wooden like El Toro would also be a great addition…

Talk about crummy reporting. Six Flags New England never got The Dark Knight coaster and has no intention of getting it in the future.
