Last month when we interviewed Tom Romary, chief executive of Yapta, Mac users didn’t get all the bells and whistles of the service that PC Internet Explorer users did. But Yapta has been working on this and now Mac users can “tag” their flights while searching for flights in their Firefox browser. And we Mac users — I’m one — like things nice and easy in our Firefox browser for maximum efficiency.
How does it work? First, sign up with Yapta for free. Add Yapta to your Firefox browser and start searching for flights. You can open Yapta in the sidebar of your browser. Once you find a flight you like (exact departure date, time and price) “Tag it with Yapta” and your search price will show up in your Yapta nav bar. It’s like a little notepad. That’s all you have to do. Yapta will then send you an e-mail if and when the price goes down. Don’t worry, if you don’t want to install Yapta onto your browser, you can track a price on a trip via their website.
I’ve been testing this out for both a trip I need to take next week and another one I need to take in February. It’s pretty obvious that you’ll have better chances of finding a cheaper flight through Yapta if you’ve got plenty of lead time. I’m still getting my feet wet with searching for flights with Yapta on my browser — and Yapta is still fine-tuning its system as it works out the beta kinks — but I’m eager to see some results because they’ve already saved other passengers a total in the millions of dollars.
NB: If you want a little bit more hand-holding on the research end of your travel planning, Farecast’s Fare Alerts are very clear about the history of pricing regarding your flight and they also make airfare predictions to help you narrow down when the best time to buy will be.
Remember that if you’ve already bought your ticket with another airline, you can submit your confirmation codes and Yapta will let you know if the price of your flight goes down before you fly. You might be eligible for a refund or voucher from your airline!
So far, Mac users can search the following airlines with Yapta and Firefox: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, United and US Airways.
