Los Angeles: urban race with High Trek Adventure, Jan. 24

Metro Gold Line

How are your L.A. street smarts? If you know your way around the city, and have a good mind for trivia, you just may stand a chance to win some cash in High Trek Adventure’s one-day urban-adventuring event, coming to Los Angeles for the first time this month.

The organizers’ website describes the event as such: “It’s a scavenger hunt, with all the thrills of ‘The Amazing Race,’ mixed in with Trivial Pursuit; throw in a mini road race and add a dash of cat-and-mouse.”

Teams consist of two racers, and about 200 participants are expected, according to High Trek Adventure’s Jason Hofsess.

One caveat of this race is that you can’t bring your wheels on the hunt: No car, no in-line skates, no skateboard and not even those shoes with the rollers. You get around on foot and by public transportation (a Metro pass is included in your registration fee). But you don’t have to leave all technological help behind. You can bring your laptop, a GPS, maps, your phone — all these may assist as you find your way around.

Now besides a fun, heartbeat-accelerating day on the streets, what is the reward of such a venture? The winning team receives $400, and second place gets $200. The three top-placing teams receive free entry to the Championship Race in Miami on Nov. 14. The 10  top teams will win a medal.

When: Check in at or after 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. The race starts at noon and will last three to five hours.

Where: The race commences at the Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.

Cost: $50 per person if registering by Jan. 23; $60 on race day
