Los Angeles earthquake downgraded to 5.4, felt downtown and across greater Southland

A strong earthquake has shaken Los Angeles

A 5.8 earthquake centered in the Los Angeles area shook buildings at 11:42 a.m. today.

Los Angeles quake has been downgraded to a magnitude 5.4 with no major damage reported yet.

- The quake shook buildings downtown and was felt from Ventura County to San Diego.
- It was centered near Chino Hills, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
- The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department has no immediate reports of injuries.
- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has activated the Office of Emergency Services.


At 12:51 pm, Metrolink is reporting the following service stoppage on its website:
“An earthquake measuring 5.8 with epicenter near Chino Hills occurred at 11:42 a.m. today. Due to the magnitude of this event, Metrolink service is suspended at this time pending an inspection of our tracks within a 50-mile radius of the earthquake epicenter. At this time, trains on our system are operating at 20 mph. Trains that operate on the Inland Empire-Orange County, Orange County, Ventura County, Riverside and 91 Lines operate on routes owned by the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway and/or Union Pacific Railroad and will not operate until those rail operators complete the same inspections.”

The epicenter is reported as Chino Hills, with news of people feeling the quake from San Diego to Las Vegas.

LAT update from Caltech at 12:18 p.m.: “The magnitude of the quake was originally set at 5.8. But Caltech officials downgraded it to 5.4 and said they doubted the temblor would cause major structural damage.

    I’m in a 1940s house in Burbank. The earthquake felt more wavy than shaky to me. The chandeliers were shaking.I stayed seated for a bit, then got under a door jam in case it got stronger.

    I wasn’t scared but it caught my attention. This is the first earthquake I’ve been in that I can remember in ages.
