Limited spaces for African safari tour led by L.A. Zoo director in summer ‘09

Giraffe in Africa

Got two weeks next summer to safari in Africa, and the funds to make it the trip of a lifetime? Then picture this: At Victoria Falls in Zambia, you explore a rain forest, river raft down the Zambezi River and take scenic drives through a local game-filled park. Next, in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, you survey the continent’s largest elephant population as well as impala, kudu, bushbuck, leopards, lions, monkeys and more. Staying at a camp here, as well as in three other wilderness areas, introduces you to the abundant diversity of the region, to its wild array of mammals, birds and plants. You wrap up your adventure in Cape Town, South Africa, where you learn about history, take in culture, and consume fine wines and food.

Sound like a dream trip? Led by L.A. Zoo Director John Lewis, it’s also bound to be educational. In partnership with eco-tourism company Wilderness Safaris, the trip next summer is limited to 18 participants, with spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. The trip is not cheap (see below), but it acts as a fundraiser for the Los Angeles Zoo, organized by the nonprofit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Assn.

When: July 25-Aug. 9, 2009

Cost: The trip costs $14,250 per person. That does not include airfare to Johannesburg, South Africa, but includes the following: airline flights within Africa, all land travel, accommodations, meals, entry fees on sightseeing tours and taxes.
