Tickets for the brand new Virgin America go on sale today. Introductory $44 one-way fares between LAX and SFO will go fast. Navigating the website is easy and you can even select your seat before you purchase. Even better are the $149 one-way First Class fares between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Haven’t you always wanted to fly in a massage chair?
Deals: I was able to book a round-trip flight between LAX and SFO in August for $109 including all taxes and fees. But before I hit the final payment button I took one more look at the Virgin America Travel Deals page and found equally enticing fares between both Los Angeles and East Coast.
Coach vs. First Class (pre-tax and fees):
Los Angeles to San Francisco: $44/$149
Los Angeles to New York (JFK): $139/$389
Los Angeles to Washington D.C.: $129/$389
Are Virgin America flights going to threaten the no-frills likes of Southwest Airlines?
Why Go: To check out that new plane smell, and the plane’s mood lighting. Coach seating has leather seats with individual monitors fully equipped with on-demand movies, video games and 18 TV channels. Also, there are special amenities for work-a-holics, “You can plug in to 110v power at every seat.”
Why Not: Flights between Los Angeles and New York have stops in San Francisco. They will begin non-stop travel on Aug. 29.
When: Reservations begin today for service starting Aug. 8, 2007
Caveat: A couple times when I was surfing the Virgin America website, the server connection dropped. Other times it timed out in the middle of a session. They’re going to be busy today so if you get an error message, wait a minute and try again. Even better, just pick up the phone and call in your reservations.
Contact: Virgin America, (877) 359-847446 (yes, there are extra numbers)

Editor’s note: Virgin America’s site was down and/or very slow earlier in the day, but it appears to be firing on all cylinders once again. Did anyone else grab a cheap ticket today?

Emails rolling in from friends and family about all the proxy server errors they were getting today when attempting to book Virgin America SFO-LAX-SFO tickets online.
Did anyone have any better luck calling 1.877.FLY.VIRGIN (that’s 877-395-8474), 5 AM - 9 PM (Pacific Time)?
Just got through to their rather chatty, almost snarky, voicemail system … which directs callers right back to their website. Anyone up for a game of boomerang?
Is anyone else bothered by PHONE-NUMBERS-THAT-DO-NOT-INCLUDE-NUMBERS?
In adventure,

Last update for tonight: The AP is reporting that Virgin America is blaming a hacker attack for today’s site unresponsiveness.
Will be interesting to watch this story develop…. Can anyone remember a hack attack on a major travel website?
We had our unstable moments when I was producing lonelyplanet.com in the early web days, but never anything major.
