American Airlines Flight 31 bound for Honolulu had to make an emergency landing and evacuation at LAX this morning soon after takeoff when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit. The plane returned safely to LAX, where the 150 passengers and seven crew members exited the plane on emergency chutes. [Click the thumbnail above to see a video of the evacuation.]
Were you on American Airlines Flight 31 today? Tell us about your evacuation experience at LAX.
We were able to find a few mentions in the Twittersphere, one pointed at a Fark item that was light-humored and poking fun at the airline industry in general right now.
“Fark: American Airlines jet makes emergency landing at LAX; all passengers willing to pay $10 emergency egress fee evacuated via slides. ha!” - mrman5917
Although two minor injuries have been reported, some Twittering observers seem to feel that evacuation is fun:
“Watching coverage of American Airlines evacuation. Since no one was hurt I can say it: Those emergency slides look like fun. Weee!” - betheboy
Some travelers fear turbulence, but others are particularly scared at takeoff. What gets you through a tense plane ride?

I’m curious why nobody opened the overwing exit doors.

overwing exit doors are for WATER landings

Overwing exits are not exclusively for water landings, of course during a water landing they are more important as the aft doors are generally unusable as they’re below the water line. Most likely the people sitting at the OWE simply found they weren’t needed, from some reports the a/c was evacuated in 30sec.

Overwing exits are used depending the type of evacuation. If the aircraft is equipped with slide rafts in the doors, and a water evac. is going on, the overwing exits become alternate. It is preferable to exit in slide rafts to stay as dry as possible and avoid hypothermia. The overwings in this situation weren’t used, probably because this happend right after takeoff. They landed “heavy”, to avoid more structural damage, since fuel is found in wings, they opted for door exits only.

Why did the flight attendants blow some of those expensive slides AFTER the passnegers were off the aircraft? AA and FAA should investigate and if guilty of revenge, take the $$$ out of their pay.

I was on the flight and sitting in the overwing emergency exit. I actually stopped taking pictures to read up on how to remove the door in anticipation of my big moment. As we approached the runway they announced we would not be using the overwing slides. My big moment was spoiled. Ah well. At least I made the video.

The LAX: American Airlines evacuation video” American Airlines Flight 31 bound for Honolulu had to make an emergency landing and evacuation seems to be correct action from the Pilot in the interest of Safety of Passengers and the Plane? be honoured. Besides the dropping down the Airbag, or Mask was too a TEST, which proved that, most of the American Airway are not practicing the SERVICES a pre-requisite to a function able Airplane?. Unless other wise these things are regularly checked no plane should be permitted to fly, in the interest of Passengers and the safety of Plane.
