Last-minute Labor Day travel deals from Southwest

It must be hard to decide where to go for Labor Day with the plethora of travel deals all around us these days. For the procrastinators out there, Southwest has put together a whole section on its website devoted to last-minute Labor Day getaways — whether you want to fly, drive or stay close to home. See restrictions and book your travel by Sept. 3.

Hotel specials | Save up to 40% off hotels. Southwest features deals in Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, Albuquerque, Austin and more. I found 40% off the four-star Hotel Nikko in San Francisco off Union Square, with rooms starting at $145 per night. The Sheraton San Diego Hotel/Marina on the San Diego Bay had rooms 33% off, starting at $122 per night. Sofitel in San Francisco had rooms starting at $91 per night. All prices were tested for dates Sept. 4 - 7, 2009.

Vacation packages | Three night flight plus hotel packages start at $62 per person, per night. I found a flight between Burbank (BUR) and Phoenix/Scottsdale (PHX) staying at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (pictured) starting at $90 per person per night. For Sept. 4-7, the total package for two people came to $600 including tax. It also included one free night at the hotel.

Car rentals | In this section, car rentals with Budget were up to 50% off. I tested Sept. 4 (10 a.m.) - Sept. 7 (10 a.m.) from Los Angeles (LAX) and found compact cars for $57 or $80 after taxes and fees. The price was $166 for a premium car or $218 after taxes. Those rates are for the full weekend, not per day.
