Last minute: Labor Day weekend events in Northern California’s Tri-Valley

27th Annual Harvest Wine Celebration

If you can make it up north for Labor Day weekend, think about stopping for some glasses of wine or a dance in Tri-Valley, which encompasses the California cities of Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, San Ramon and Danville. The region will play host to a handful of fun festivities during the holiday weekend.

Following are a few of the planned events:

27th Annual Harvest Wine Celebration: This Livermore festival that stretches across the region’s wine country will feature live music, art and opportunities to taste local food and wine at various wineries. Over 40 wineries will be participating, and free shuttles will cart attendees among the wineries, on seven different routes.

When: Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2008

Cost: A two-day pass is $50 per adult when purchased in advance; at the door, tickets will be $55. A Monday-only pass is $45.

Tour de Train: The Niles Canyon Railway is running a “wine train,” a two-hour trip hosted by a sommelier. As you ride the rails, you’ll be presented with 30 wine selections from six different wineries.

When: Aug. 31, 2008

Cost: $39 per person

143rd Annual Scottish Highland Games: If you love the sound of a good bagpipe, you’re in luck: Pipers and all things Celtic will be en masse at this popular traditional festival, at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Get ready to watch over 750 marching pipers and drummers, a “kilted mile race,” Celtic dancing, Clydesdales and more during this two-day event.

When: Aug. 30 and Aug. 31, 2008

Cost: Advance-purchase tickets are no longer available. At the gate, tickets will be $17 per adult for a one-day pass, $25 for a two-day pass.
