The last post I wrote about Vegas hotel deals, we got a comment that said, “Anybody who pays $160-$200 night for a hotel room is an idiot. What a rip-off for just a bed, a TV, and a bathroom!”
I’d like to say that I swing both ways when it comes to hotel deals. On one hand I like to look for value in upscale rooms. I am from the camp that adores TheHotel at Mandalay Bay. This is a hotel room with a living room, big flat-screen TV, separate bedroom and big marble-tiled bathroom with a large tub (with its own flat-screen TV!), that’s relaxation in 725 square feet to me. When it goes on sale, I perk up.
On the other hand — I love finding Las Vegas hotel bargains. I’ve stayed at the Gold Coast, Binions, Imperial Palace, Golden Nugget, Artisan and South Point. These are rooms that regularly go for less than $75/night. For those of you who would rather spend your Vegas dollars on anything but the room, here are …
Six Vegas bargain hotels under $60 (pre-tax) that I would stay at myself.
Prices were for this week, midweek. But look for low rates similar to these on the hotel websites’ available rate calendars throughout the rest of winter.
Gold Coast Hotel & Casino: $31-$45/night
Where: Vegas.com
Why go? Laid-back sports fans can get down with the Gold Coast. I love their hot dog stand and ice cream parlor. The small poker room is surrounded by flat-screen TVs and Ping Pang Pong is a good restaurant if you like Chinese food. The thing I remember most about the rooms is that they were redone with LCD flat-screen TVs and had decent soaps for the price. Note, this hotel is off-Strip next to the Rio and across from the Palms.
Artisan Hotel: $31; $38 for a king bed
Where: Vibe Agent
Why go? If you don’t want anyone to find you, this is your spot. This off-Strip hotel has a dark ground floor bar that you can get lost in. Look past the cheesy “art” theme and hideaway from the rest of Vegas. The thing I remember most about the room was that it had a chenille throw blanket on the bed. It was decorated like they were trying to please you. It’s obvious the Artisan really wants to be considered a boutique hotel, but the place (and it’s surroundings) still feel a bit gritty.
Tropicana: $35-$40
Where: Hotels.com had the rooms $4 cheaper than Tropicana’s website
Why go: Good location and they offer all sorts of additional discounts: two-for-one “Folies Bergere” tickets, $2 off “Bodies” and Titanic exhibits and more.
Imperial Palace: $48-$49
Where: Vegas.com had the rooms $1 cheaper than Hotels.com and Expedia.
Why go: Excellent center Strip location. If you want to let loose and have some fun, you’ll get a laugh out of the “dealertainers” and be tempted to drink from the Champagne blackjack pit. The thing I remember most about the rooms was that they had a tropical décor, Wi-Fi (for a fee) and I immediately thought it was better than staying at a Motel 6.
Four Queens: $57-$59
Where: Vegas.com had rooms $2 cheaper than the direct hotel website.
Why go? The Four Queens recently renovated their rooms. So you’ll get flat-screen HD TVs and in-room refrigerators. If you like the festive atmosphere of Fremont Street but want to spend less than you would at the Golden Nugget, this is your best bet for value.
Silverton Hotel & Casino: $59
Where: Hotels.com and Vegas.com
Why go? The Silverton is comfortable! It is off the Strip and has a lodge feel to it. Fishermen will like the adjoining Bass Pro Shop and kids will enjoy staring endlessly at the giant aquarium. I like the food and the $5 table games. I often go to the Mermaid bar and get great bar food while looking at the fish.

Love the new renovated Flamingo rooms with the huge tuck and roll vynal headboards……hot pink and of course flat screens.

Silverton is decent, with good ol’ American eats popular with the truckers from across the street, but I like a casino to give back enough to at least hold my interest.

I liked the Tropicana, although I think I paid around $100 on the weekend. Our room was HUGE! I was big enough for two Queen beds, a Queen pullout and space for another bed. It’s not a glamorous casino, but didn’t spend any time there anyway.
Another good cheapie is the Excalibur. The rooms are decent and so is the food. The only downside is that there seem to be a lot more kids staying at this hotel.

I agree with this list except for the Trop which I would advise avoiding like the plague at any price.
On my last trip to Sin City, I grabbed an awesome new room at Planet Hollywood (Formerly Aladdin) for the steal price of $49. Booked it on Priceline on a name your price deal. Of course, I did not know where I was staying for $49 until the sale went through, but that was part of the fun (this is now considered a 4 star hotel in Vegas). It was awesome! And I felt like a superstar grabbing such a deal.
On any given night of the week, one can typically find rooms under $60 at Hooters–if you can get past the hiprah feel of the place, it’s a good deal. Likewise, the Strat is almost always under $60 weekdays as is Circus Squared.
Avoid downtown “motels” at any price, except for the Nugget, which is virtually never under $60 it seems–but even if it is, their ventilation system sucks because, well it fails to suck much of the smoke out of the joint.
Enjoy!

Thanks for all your comments everyone! I accidentally overlooked my favorite downtown hotel, The Golden Nugget because their rooms are usually $69 at the cheapest. But sure enough, they’re $59/night midweek this week.
As for the Stratosphere and Circus Circus - I didn’t add them to the list because if I can’t even handle being in their casino, there’s no way I could stay in the room. These hotels are a bit too gritty for me.
I would however, and have stayed at the Excalibur. (They have new rooms!) But I’d prefer to stay at the six I mentioned.

Besides the Golden Nugget, you can try The California Hotel casino in downtown lv for $50 mid-week and $100 weekend. This place is known to have alot of Hawaiian people staying here. Also, most of their rooms had been recently renovated.
