Quick, what time is it? I’m going to bed, but if you’re up and reading this, check out the implosion in Las Vegas. The 65-year-old Frontier will implode today at 2:30 a.m. after a fireworks display. Channel 8 Eyewitness News will be airing it live and you can catch it on the Web via streaming video at Las Vegas Implosion: This Time the New Frontier.
The New Frontier is closing to make room for a new luxe hotel and casino under the same brand as the Plaza in New York. I will remember the Frontier for my trip during the National Finals Rodeo a couple of years ago. Every year the cowboys come to town in December and Gilley’s at the Frontier would be a must stop.
Here are some other events that the Frontier will be remembered for.
1942 — Last Frontier Hotel opens. It was the second resort to open on the Las Vegas Strip.
1955 — Renamed New Frontier
1956 — Elvis made his first Vegas appearance
1960s — Wayne Newton performed
1967 — Bought by Howard Hughes for $14 million
1970 — Final performance of Diana Ross and the Supremes
1980s — Siegfried & Roy played here before they moved to the Mirage
2007 — Closed their doors on July 16
