Las Vegas: cheap room rates for poker players

Mirage.com poker room photoMarc Cooper just wrote a helpful travel essay for novice poker players, “In Las Vegas, the right poker room makes you predator, not prey”. He accompanied it with “A quick guide to Las Vegas poker.” This piece mostly tells you where not to play if you want to avoid the pros, with a few exceptions.

Now, lets talk about getting hotel discounts in Vegas just for playing poker.

Get a cheaper room with a “poker rate”. Many regular poker players know that you can call the casino’s poker room and ask for a “poker rate”. This is a special discounted room rate for players willing to play a certain number of hours, usually in the neighborhood of 4-6/day. All Vegas Poker has a great page for describing this service and what you need to do to get it.

Sample poker room rates:

Mirage, Poker room (702) 791-7291 (pictured)
$109 (Sunday -Thursday) – play 6 hours/day
$149 (Friday & Saturday) – play 8 hours/day

Note: Online room rates for a Sunday & Monday in June were $179/night. That’s a total savings of $140 before taxes and fees.

Wynn Las Vegas, Poker room (702) 770-3090
$129 (Sunday -Thursday) – play 6 hours/day
$199 (Friday & Saturday) – play 6 hours/day

Note: Friday night room rates start at $399/night in June. That’s a $200/night savings.
Tip: Go with a buddy, the Wynn allows you to split the hours required between the number of guests in the room. Also, the guest TVs are set up so that you can add your name to poker game waiting lists from the comfort of your own room. Monitor the list then head down to the poker room once your name is getting close to being called.

Caesars Palace, (702)785-6566
$139 (Sunday -Thursday) – play 8 hours/day
$239 (Friday & Saturday) – play 8 hours/day

Note: This is one of the newer and bigger poker rooms in town and consistently has a good amount of players in it. There will be no poker room rates during the World Series of Poker (June 1- July 17), but regular rooms in July after the series started at $300/Friday and $200/weekdays. Tournament play does not count towards room’s required hours.

Mandalay Bay, (877) 632-7800:
This weekend Mandalay Bay is hosting a World Poker Tour tournament. There were no poker room rates available and the poker room could not let me know what poker rates would be when they’re back on. Check back regularly if you just have to stay at this casino.

Note: This is a tourist heavy poker room and known among regulars as an “ATM” for good poker players.
