Las Vegas: Has $20 tip trick worked for you?

Our recent post about tipping in Las Vegas has sparked quite the discussion in the comments section. You’ll see that there are many folks on both side of the tipping line, those that like to offer money as a way to get better service, and those that think our world is better without tips.

One reader alerted us to the $20 Trick, the name that has been given to this act of trying to get a better room by handing over a cash tip at check-in. I’ve rounded up some more online discussions about it. You’ll find that sometimes it works … and sometimes it doesn’t. Have fun!

The Twenty Dollar Trick: a website that tells you how to do it.
Two Way Hard Three: one of my favorite Vegas blogs, discussed the $20 Trick back in 2005.
Trip Advisor: readers discuss the $20 Trick in their forums.
Flyer Talk: travelers share success and failure stories about the $20 Trick.
USA Today: Another discussion about the $20 trick, stemming from Kitty Bean Yancey’s Hotel Hotsheet.

Let ‘er rip: Has slipping a double sawbuck or Jackson worked for you? Do you object to such practices as bribery? Is the $20 Trick an urban legend perpetrated by Sin City employees?

$20 tip worked perfect for me. Hubby and I took our son and new daughter in law to MGM. Upon check in I handed $20 and drivers licence to clerk and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available my son also had $20 in his hand, the clerk at first said there were none available, I said I was hoping to give my son a nice room as part of his honeymoon, after a few mins he came back and said he could upgrade them to the celebrity bungalow suite and hubby and i got a veiw over the strip. So my son also handed him an extra $20.
