I’ll never forget the morning after my first day of snowboarding. I felt as if I’d been run over by a snowplow, I’d never been so sore in my life. But what a fun day I’d had on the slopes (well, on the one bunny slope), and I was eager to get back out again.
But lollygagging out there on my own without professional instruction, it took me a while to “get it” on the board, and I got a little banged up along the way. If I were to do it all over again, I would make sure Day 1 — and maybe Days 2 and 3 for that matter — included a lesson that would teach me to move more safely and effectively on the mountain (less recklessness = less hurt = more fun).
That’s my story with a simple moral, but if my revelations haven’t inspired you, then perhaps the matter of money will: Squaw Valley USA in Lake Tahoe is offering a superbly priced day package for beginners.
Deal: On the resort’s upcoming “Learn to Ski and Ride Days,” a $35 beginner package is available that includes an all-day lift ticket, equipment rentals, lessons and a $50 discount voucher for an optional follow-up lesson, which can be used any day of the 2008-09 season. The special is on offer the following Sundays: Jan. 11, Feb. 8 and Mar. 8.
This sure beats the normal $79 price tag of an adult lift ticket at the resort.
No need to book the $35 package in advance. They can be purchased upon arrival at the Far East Rental Center next to the learning center, where lessons take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
