If you still have no idea what you’re doing for Labor Day weekend, it’s time to confront any denial about the end of summer skulking just around the corner and, if you’re not all set to celebrate locally, focus your energy on travel planning.
Fly, if you can, to help boost the morale of lonely airports (see “Fewer people will fly on Labor Day, airline group says“), but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, I suggest a short road trip. Following are a couple of hotel specials that had availability at time of research, one in San Diego, for the south-bound, and the other in San Luis Obispo, for those with eyes toward the north.
San Diego: The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is offering a Labor Day Promotion rate of $139 per night (pre-tax). Book this deal by Aug. 27, 2008, for travel between Aug. 27 and Sept. 1. Regular weekend rates vary, but generally seem to start at around $224 per night.

San Luis Obispo: With the Apple Farm Inn’s holiday promotion, buy two and get one free: Stay and pay for Friday, Aug. 29, and Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, and receive your stay on Sunday, Aug. 31, free of charge. The rate for your first two nights will be $289 per night (pre-tax). In addition, you’ll receive two free passes for an outdoor “family picnic supper” at the inn on Sunday night. There, you can celebrate the holiday weekend in finger-lickin’ style with chicken, tri-tip, baked beans, corn on the cob and root beer floats.
