Los Angeles & Malibu: Summer events at the Getty

The Getty Center photo galleryYou probably already know that free admission to the Getty Center and the Getty Villa are among the very best deals in town. But maybe you didn’t realize all of the special events going on at the Getty museums this summer. Whether you’re looking for world music concerts, bawdy reenactments of ancient Roman comedies, conversations with contemporary artists or family story hours, the Getty is the place to be.

Deal: Most of the special events at the Getty Center in West L.A. and the Getty Villa in Malibu are free to the public (parking at either costs $8). Some of the Getty’s special events require advance reservations (which are also usually free). A few events, like select dramatic performances and music concerts, do require purchasing tickets (typically $20-35/person), which you should reserve well in advance.

Have you visited the Getty Villa since it re-opened? Post your tips about the best times to visit in the Comments section below.

When: The Getty has free special events going on year-round, but most of the scheduled summer activities are only happening now through the end of September. Click here for the Getty’s full calendar of events.

Caveat: Entrance to the Getty Villa is free, but an advance timed ticket is still required (see the Getty FAQ for details). Reservations are not required for visits to the main Getty Center campus in West L.A.

Why Go: Many of the Getty’s free events are scheduled during the evening, which is not only convenient for those who work late, but for anyone who wants to soak in gorgeous sunset views over the Pacific.

Why Not: You’ll have to plan in advance for visits to the Getty Villa in Malibu (see Caveat, above).
