The boutique hotel chain Kimpton Hotels has a new weekends-only “Pick and Play” promotion that puts 42 hotels across the country on sale. Starting at only $129 per night for selected hotels, the three-tiered sale also extends to additional Kimpton hotels, on sale for $159 or $179 per night. If you’re thinking about a weekend getaway, San Francisco has three hotels starting at $129 (Harbor Court Hotel, Serrano Hotel and Hotel Triton), and four hotels in the $159 category (Hotel Monaco, Hotel Palomar, Prescott Hotel, Sir Francis Drake Hotel). Los Angeles’ Hotel Palomar Hotel Westwood (2008) is also on sale in the $159-per-night tier. San Diego’s Solamar Hotel is not on the sale list.
Deal or no deal? In addition to weekend nights starting at $129, per night, pre-tax, the deal also includes a $30 dining credit or free parking. The relatively new Los Angeles Hotel Palomar in Westwood starts at $159 on the sale. I found the rate valid for next Friday night ($159) with free parking, worth $30 per night. After taxes the package was $181 for the single-night booking through the sale. When I double-checked the price on Hotels.com their rate was $175 down from $219. After taxes the deal would be $199, but that’s before the mandatory $30 valet parking charge if you are driving in. Still, double-check your selected dates on other travel sites, sometimes they are having their own sale and you can save a little bit more, like on the Vancouver hotel below.
Tested: I wanted to know how much rooms usually cost for hotels in Kimpton’s highest sale section ($179/night). I randomly chose the Pacific Palisades Hotel in Vancouver, observed their blackout dates that ran July 28-Aug.8, and checked the cost for a room on the weekend of Aug. 28-30. The Kimpton deal did indeed have the room on offer for $179 per night and included $30 dining credit or free parking ($358 after taxes). But Hotels.com had the room for only $137 per night, pre-tax, and included a $50 Best Buy gift card and a spa credit with an undisclosed amount ($318 after taxes). The difference, besides the cost, was that on the Kimpton site you could get the King Executive Suite whereas on Hotels.com the $137 was just for the Queen Deluxe Suite. The King Executive Suite, however, was only $154 per night.
