How often do airlines add flights in response to customer demand?

JetBlue announced today that it will add extra flights to and from Washington, D.C., “to accommodate the surge in demand” from travelers seeking airline tickets to attend the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama in January. Flights are being added to and from Long Beach, New York and Oakland in time for the Jan. 20 festivities.

You can book now on an added flight that leaves Long Beach (LGB) at 8:05 a.m. on Jan. 16, and arrives at Dulles International Airport (IAD) at 3:50 p.m. The airline also added a return flight from Dulles at 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 22 that arrives at Long Beach at 7:30 p.m.
