iPod tours of New Orleans, Miami & more

Audissey Guides: Miami tour guide photoWhen I go on vacation, I can’t stand taking guided walking tours. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the tour guide’s valuable tips and entertaining bite-sized lessons in local history, or the chance to meet other curious travelers. I’m just an impatient person who likes to take things at her own pace. That’s why iPod walking tours, like those offered free by some national parks or sold by companies such as Audissey Guides, are such a great idea.

Deal: Each of Audissey Guides’ walking tours costs just $10 and covers one small neighborhood of the highlighted city, lasting about an hour as you walk about one mile. You can preview and listen to small audio samples of each tour for free before you buy. The new Miami walking tour, hosted by a bikini model and bartender, covers South Beach (SoBe) sights, including the World Erotic Art Museum. The New Orleans walking tour around the French Quarter is escorted by a local musician and pool shark, has stops that include a voodoo shop, and features an avant-garde original soundtrack.

Know of any other downloadable audio tours for major U.S. cities that you’d recommend? Tell us about ‘em by posting in the Comments section below.

More…details: For each N’awlins tour sold, Audissey Guides will donate $1 to the nonprofit New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. Audissey Guides tours are also available for Boston, Chicago, Seattle and Hollywood.

When: You can pay for and download these audio walking tours online anytime, 24/7/365.

Caveat: Payment is only accepted with Visa or MasterCard or by purchase order.

Critique: Some of the stops along the Miami walking tour aren’t accessible at the same time of day or on the same days of the week (e.g., Miami’s Mansion Nightclub isn’t always open when other SoBe sights are). Also, are you really going to bring your iPod with you into a dance club? Or finish the walking tour after you’ve been clubbing?

It’s not an audio tour, but Wcities offers free downloadable cityguides that you can store in your iPod’s “notes” section. They’re not comprehensive or anything, but they cover a small slice of the most important things to do in each city they cover. And they cover more than 300 cities all over the world, so you’ve got lots of info to choose from. Plus, you can customize your guide by going to their website and putting together your own itinerary of destinations (which they call a “Travel Bag”), which can also be downloaded to your iPod. I could see this being a great free companion to the Audissey guides… you do your audio neighborhood tour, then you consult your notes section for a place to grab a bite afterward. Or a place to go dancing after that. And a museum to check out the next day.

iTour Savannah at http://www.itoursavannah.com has been producing and marketing iPod tours of this incredibly beautiful city for nearly three years. iTour Savannah was one of the pioneers in the audio tour business and the first of its kind in the Southern USA. The brand was recently purchased by City Trex, LLC, an applications developer in Georgia which plans to release iTours in markets throughout the USA this October. City Trex integrates new elements to audio tours including social networking and user-produced content. More at http://www.citytrex.com/

These days pretty much the whole world has an audio tour associated with it.

    Have a look at: http://www.tourdio.com

In New York City, check out CityListen. They’ve got some great tours of Central Park and Greenwich Village. There are quite a few. I have really enjoyed them.
