As a child growing up in Riverside County, I was well familiar with Idyllwild, the San Jacinto Mountains village with a folksy flair and arty vibe. In winter, when we wanted to ski, we drove up to Big Bear, in the San Bernardino Mountains. But for a more relaxing day of battering one another with snowballs, sliding down slopes on baking pans (I guess my parents didn’t think we did this often enough to splurge for sleds), and general lollygagging about and shopping, we drove up to Idyllwild.
Today, Idyllwild is still a sleepy charmer, with a quaint center full of shops, restaurants and galleries, and in the vicinity, trails that will take you through alpine meadows and manzanita forests. And, just a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, it’s a good bet if you’d like a couple days of quiet retreating without roughing it. Sound tempting? The following deal may help make it more so:
Deal: At Tahquitz Inn in Idyllwild, get two consecutive nights in a one-bedroom room for $100 (pre-tax; with tax it comes to $110 total). This rate is based on double occupancy, with $5 extra charged for each additional guest. Weekend rates normally start at $89, pre-tax, per night.
The code for the special rate is “FEB100.” If booking online, include the code in the “special requests” box.
When: Valid for stays now through Feb. 28, 2009.
Contact: Tahquitz Inn; (877) 659-4554
