Hawaii - travel discounts by just about everyone

Hawaii: Maui sunset

Listen up, vacation shoppers: There’s a major statewide sale on in Hawaii – or that’s what seems to be the case. Hotels, rental-car agencies and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau have been talking up a storm about how you can save, save, save on the islands this summer and fall. They hope, I’m assuming, that you’ll forgive the hefty price tags on airline tickets once you accrue all those discounts on land and via packages.

On the Hawaii tourism bureau’s site, you’ll find a number of third-party promotions, including 50% off companion airfare through Pleasant Holidays and $200 off vacation packages booked through American Airlines Vacations, Travelocity, Orbitz and more. As always, don’t skip over any fine print.

If you’re not looking to go the all-in-one package route, your online searches will bring up many discounts being promoted by hotels and resorts. For instance, the Mauian on Maui’s Napili Bay is offering a 15% discount on its ocean-view rooms (usually $195 per night, pre-tax), from Sept. 1 through Dec. 22, 2008. Also on Maui, the Royal Lahaina Resort is offering a handful of discounts and good-value room-and-food packages. Keep an eye on our blog, as we feature the best hotel deals that come across our desks.

If you’re not stuck on hotels, you could say no to the “sale” hype with a vacation rental. Or you could camp (renting gear from an outfitter in Hawaii if you aren’t camping-equipped yourself), stay in hostels, or perhaps – for a new kind of adventure if you haven’t tried it – couch surf.

What sales have you found worth sharing? Post them in our Comments below; we’d love to hear about them.

I see the Wyland Waikiki has launched a new blog which lists a number of specials and packages. This is a great property for those seeking value in the heart of Waikiki. http://wylandwaikikiblog.wordpress.com

We noticed the “VRBO” condo we’ve rented in the past on Maui has a summer special rate of $79 per night, down from $114. Ocean front in Maalaea, not a bad deal.
