I doubt I have to convince you that summer is a beautiful time to escape to Hawaii. But it’s also one of the peak seasons for travel to the islands (the other is from mid-December through Easter).
Finding cheap fares from the mainland will be difficult from now until prices drop dramatically after Labor Day. But if you can’t wait until then to visit the islands, how much are you going to have to pay? Is it even possible to find round-trip airfare from LAX for less than $600 this summer?
Sample round-trip airfares from LAX (including taxes and fees):
To/from Honolulu (LAX-HNL): $537.13 on ATA [via ATA.com]
To/from Maui (LAX-KHL): $580.30 [via Delta]
To/from Kona, Big Island (LAX-KOA): $661.10 [via Hawaiian Airlines]
To/from Hilo, Big Island (LAX-HIL): $657.85 [via CheapTickets.com]
To/from Kauai (LAX-LIH): $661.10 [via Hawaiian Airlines]
Remember that if you’re traveling to a neighbor island, you can also buy a round-trip ticket to Honolulu, then book inter-island flights separately, for example, on go! (regularly from $47.40 each way, including taxes and fees).
Have you found a cheaper airfare to Hawaii this summer? Tell us how you did it in the Comments section below.
Caveat: The sample airfares above are not comprehensive. Depending on which dates you travel, you may be able to pay less by booking through online travel discounters or the airlines’ own websites. Keep in mind that if you’re flying to Lanai or Molokai, you’ll have to change planes in Honolulu, or possibly Maui.
Why Go: Even if you end up paying more for your flight to/from the mainland, inter-island airfares have dropped to an all-time low. So, island hoppers will still be able to save money overall.
Why Not: You’ll probably be able to get cheaper fares (from around $400 round trip) in September and October, which are hot, dry months to visit the islands. Personally, I think the savings on flights and accommodations make an autumn trip worthwhile, especially since ocean waters are blissfully calm then.
