Hawaii roundup: Honolulu City Lights begins Saturday; Ohana remodel special; free bags, no trees, on Superferry

Honolulu City Lights

The holiday season gets truly underway in Honolulu this weekend. I’ve got more on this for you, plus an Ohana hotel deal, a Superferry update and a look at tasty somethings for you to ponder for your next trip to Kauai.

Festival | The nearly monthlong Honolulu City Lights kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) night at Honolulu’s City Hall, with a tree-lighting ceremony, electric-light parade, musical entertainment and more. The exhibit, now in its 24th year, will color and illuminate downtown Honolulu daily and nightly through Jan. 1, 2009.

Hotel news | The Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber has announced completion of its interior renovations, part of a $21-million upgrade to the hotel, reports Pacific Business News. For those who want to get an up-close gander, the hotel is offering rooms starting at $139 per night (pre-tax) under its current “Re-introduction Special.” Note that the hotel’s pool and pool deck will be closed until construction on them is completed later this month; in the meantime, guests can use the pools at Ohana Waikiki East and Ohana Waikiki West hotels.

Superferry | If you’ll be in Hawaii over the holidays and are considering travel between islands via Superferry, note that you can check more bags than you may have thought, but don’t think about carting a Christmas tree. Now through Jan. 16, 2009, walk-on passengers are allowed to check in four bags for free, as opposed to the previously permitted two. But Christmas trees, fresh-cut or live, cannot be brought onboard, warns the Superferry homepage.

Food | Lastly, I’ll leave you with some food for thought. If you haven’t seen it already, read “Hawaii: meal deals in Kauai for under $20” to get those taste buds worked up for your next trip to the islands. Click on the photo above for a visual tour of the favorites.
