Hawaii: Kauai’s Princeville Resort up to 35% off

Princeville Resort photoWhen I travel around the Hawaiian Islands, I make a mental list of fantastic hotels I’d love to stay at someday…when they’re on sale, that is. Now’s the time. The Princeville Resort on Kauai, part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts’ Luxury Collection, is offering deep discounts on room rates and activities, and if you stay five nights, the sixth is free. I’d almost fly back to Kauai just to take a dip in the hotel’s 5,000-square-foot infinity pool.

Deal: The hotel website advertises 35% off regular room rates for Starwood Preferred Guests, with a minimum stay of five nights required to get the sixth night free. This special rate plan also entitles guests to 35% discounts on golf course green fees, tennis court rentals and spa admission, as well as up to 35% off car rentals from Avis.

When I tried booking this deal online (using special rate plan SPGN35), the discounts averaged 20-25% off the best available online rates for those same dates (and a full 35% off the hotel’s rack rates). However, the Starwood online reservations system didn’t automatically include the sixth night free, so it’d be best to contact the Starwood Preferred Guest program directly by phone when making reservations (request rate plan SPG35HI).

When: Offer valid for stays through December 25th, 2007 (subject to availability).

Caveats: You must be a Starwood Preferred Guest to be eligible for the discount rates. But that’s not a problem. Enroll in the program online for free, then bring along your membership ID for check-in.

Why Go: For rooms with views of idyllic Bale Hai beach, where South Pacific was filmed.

Why Not: If you want to explore the Garden Isle, rather than stay for a week at an exclusive resort.

Critique: Some say the Princeville Resort is showing its age, so it’s not surprising that it is scheduled for extensive renovations and rebranding as a St. Regis hotel soon.
