I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day than among the incredible scenery of the Aloha State, with its dizzying array of natural wonders. If you’re lucky enough to get some time on the Hawaiian islands this month, try to catch an Earth Day celebration.
Unfortunately, one of the larger Earth Day weekend bashes, the 5th Annual Kokua Festival, April 19-20, 2008, is sold out. Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds are headlining. But nevermind that. Hold out for the 6th Annual next year, and in the meantime, see what’s cookin’ at the following events in honor of our one and only planet.
Sustainability Fest
Hawaii Hall Lawn, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Honolulu, Oahu
April 18, 2008, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
This free event put on by University of Hawaii, Manoa, will feature an open-air marketplace, educational booths, a scavenger hunt, a recycling drive and an organic beer and wine garden. Live musical entertainers include Makana, Millicent Cummings, Pressure Drop, Quadraphonix and Go Jimmy Go.
Earth Day Celebration & Plant Sale
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, Kahului, Maui

Another freebie, this event will feature Hawaiian food, music and culture. Entertainers George Kahumoku Jr. and Uncle Richard Ho‘opi‘i are among the performers. Activities include lei-making and kapa-beating.
Earth Day Celebration
Mitchell Pauole Center, Kaunakakai, Molokai
April 18, 2008; 5 p.m.-9 p.m.
Learn a little something while having fun at this annual Earth Day event sponsored by the Nature Conservancy. The evening will consist of exhibits, entertainment and food.
Kona Earth Festival
Kailua-Kona, Big Island
April 19-June 21, 2008
The many events over this two-month period include educational workshops, garden tours, beach cleanups, an organic farm and sustainable foods tour (May 4) and an Earth Mother’s Day Organic Brunch (May 11).
Where will you be celebrating Earth Day?
