Hawaii: Autumn airfare sale update

Hawaiian Airlines island photo Although you can’t find out about it yet just by browsing the airline’s website, Hotwire’s Travel Ticker alerted me to an autumn airfare sale from the West Coast to Hawaii with Hawaiian Airlines. So, I thought this would be a good time to take another look at just exactly how far airfares to Hawaii from the mainland have fallen recently.

Deal: With Hawaiian Airlines, fall airfares for round-trip flights from LAX to Honolulu (HNL), Oahu, start at $322.24, including taxes. If you can fly from San Diego (SAN), round-trip airfares to Kahului (OGG), Maui, start at $344.30. To get the cheapest flights, you’ll have to depart on a Tuesday or Thursday. Fares for other days of the week cost $10-60 more each way.

When I checked competing airlines, I found even cheaper seats (saving me a total of $20-30 per round trip). On ATA, round-trip LAX–HNL flights this fall start at $292.30, including taxes. That’s for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday departures. If you want to fly on other days of the week, expect to pay at least $50 to over $100 more per round trip. Meanwhile, Aloha Airlines has cheaper round-trip flights this fall from San Diego to Maui, starting at $320.30 round trip.

When: For the Hawaiian Airlines sale fares, you must book by Tuesday, August 21st, and travel between August 20th and November 15th, 2007.

Why Go: These are just about rock-bottom prices for round-trip flights from the mainland to Hawaii.

Why Not: If you want to fly direct from LAX to any of the neighbor islands, it’ll cost you significantly more.

Critique: Hawaiian Airlines doesn’t always have the cheapest airfares to Hawaii, but there are other reasons to fly with this award-winning airline. In 2006, for example, the Department of Transportation ranked it as the top U.S. airline for punctuality and bagging handling.
