EXPIRED Hawaii: (Almost free) car-rental packages

Renting a car is pretty much essential for any trip to Hawaii’s neighbor islands (i.e., any island other than Oahu), especially if you’re keen to explore everything Hawaii has to offer. Now United Vacations is making it easy on you by offering free car rental add-ons to its Hawaii flight and hotel vacation packages.

Deal: Purchase a five-night/six-day vacation package, including a round-trip flight and hotel stay on any island, with United Vacations. Enter the promotional code SAVEBIG when booking online, then add on a five-day economy car rental from Alamo for free (note: the small print says that local taxes, incidental charges and optional insurance are not included, so the car rental is not 100% “free”). Still, it’s a good deal, especially since Hawaii vacation packages totaling over $1,200 qualify for an extra discount of $50 to $200.

When: Book by May 31st, 2007. Free car rental offer applies for travel through the end of 2007.

More Details: Pick your hotel carefully. A few of the United Vacations packages cost slightly more than booking your flight, hotel and car rental separately. But I found that United’s vacation package deals for Outrigger and Ohana resorts typically offered substantial savings of $100 or more for the flight and hotel alone—and that was even before even adding in the extra cost of renting a car.
