National park hotels and lodges rarely offer discounts for their in-demand accommodations. But ATA Airlines customers can get a deal at the Volcano House on the Big Island, perched on the rim of Kilauea’s summit caldera inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Now you can linger overnight inside the park, instead of whisking through it on a drive-by tour, and take time to see the live lava flow that glows as it falls into the ocean after dark. Then chat by the fire in Uncle George’s Lounge or relax in a vintage koa-wood rocking chair back in your room.
Deal: ATA customers get 10% off the regular room rates at the Volcano House. Rates range from $112.50/night for a garden-view room in the original ranger station to $202.50/night for a crater-view deluxe room in the newer wing; these rates exclude taxes of 11.46%. Use promotion code ATA 101 for online bookings. You must show an ATA ticket receipt or boarding pass upon check-in at the hotel.
When: Available now for an indefinite period of time. Make your reservations as far in advance as possible, as the hotel is often full.
Caveat: The ATA discount rates are not available for the hotel’s standard Ohia Wing rooms, which cost $95/night.
Why Go: To hike through an active volcanic moonscape as seen in the remake of Planet of the Apes.
Why Not: If cool, foggy and even rainy weather (typical inside the park) isn’t your idea of a Hawaiian vacation.
Critique: The Volcano House is a historic, but very rustic hotel. There are no TVs, and some of the rooms haven’t been renovated recently. If creature comforts are more important to you than location, find somewhere else to stay.
Disconnect: There is no Internet access for guests at the hotel. Plan to unplug and unwind.
