Obama sweeter than McCain? A sugary presidential poll in Harvard Square

Burdick\'s chocolates in Cambridge, Mass. If the presidential race is like a box of chocolates (credit to Forrest Gump and National Public Radio), then smart voters might head to L.A. Burdick Handmade Chocolates in Harvard Square to buy a box of John McCain or Barack Obama sweets.

As I was buzzing around Boston a few weeks ago, I stumbled on this “box of chocolates poll” of the presidential candidates.

For this election year, the store created a McCain assortment with chocolates described as Arizona Citrus, Hot Pepper Tequila, Peanut Butter and Kentucky Rye and an Obama assortment with Hawaiian Pineapple, Kenyan Coffee, Kansas Corn Crunch and Tennessee Sour Mash. The store tallies the number of boxes sold in honor of each candidate — not exactly a scientific poll but certainly a novel one.

You can buy a half-pound box ($28) or a quarter-pound box ($15), each wrapped with a Democratic or Republican seal.

The online poll page features profiles of each candidate, a description of each chocolate and a picture of Obama eating a chocolate mouse made by Burdick’s.

The chocolates are available until election day — and the store’s poll results are updated daily on its website.
