Group travel: online travel itineraries

Your Scene Rose Family by DebYou did it, didn’t you. You suggested taking a trip with your family or friends while you were woozy from too much turkey this weekend. Then you got home, checked your e-mail and found your pals enthusiastic and ready to start planning a getaway. Doh!

I ran across a group travel website called I’m In. I like it because there are lots of travel itineraries and group trip ideas to browse without having to commit to anything. Whether you wanted a golf getaway with the guys, a Canyon Ranch spa retreat with the girls, or a momcation, I’m In had a lot of inspiring leads. They break down the itineraries by schedule, activity and include details about price so you know what you’re getting into before you start the real planning.

What I didn’t like about the site was that a lot of the itineraries were contributed to by travel provider partners. In today’s age of user-generated reviews, I expected more first-hand content. Also, be ready to spend. I was hard-pressed to find many deals for budget-conscious travelers. The real fun on the site seems to come once you start planning your group trip. You can add photos, have discussions with your group members all on one central location and share documents, links and to-do lists.

If I’m In isn’t for you, the Los Angeles Times article “Planning group travel via website” discusses other online group travel tools such as Groople and GroupTravelPlanet.com.

What’s the biggest group you’ve traveled with, and where did you go?
