Griffith Park fire is out; L.A. Zoo & Griffith Observatory open; Telegraph fire blazes near Yosemite

Griffith Park Fire: The L.A. Fire Department used water-dropping helicopters as part of a massive response to the blaze

You might’ve missed the Griffith Park fire because it was put out so quickly this afternoon. The brush fire was first reported at 12:42 p.m., and was put out in three hours and only burned 15 acres. [Update: The burned acreage estimate was raised to 25 acres Monday morning.]

The fire area was west of the Los Angeles Zoo and Travel Town but never threatened the zoo’s property. The zoo evacuated 4,000 guests at 1 p.m. but plans on opening Monday at 10 a.m. — call (323) 644-4200 to confirm.

I also called the Griffith Observatory. Note that they are always closed on Mondays but plan to be open on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph fire is advancing on the town of Mariposa, near Yosemite National Park, and has burned more than 26,000 acres. Twelve homes have burned, around 500 homes are evacuated and authorities have cut power to the park.
