‘Glamp’ in the desert: Robert Stone’s Rosa Muerta

The word is out about Rosa Muerta, former rocker and artist Robert Stone’s head-turning creation in the desert. If you haven’t heard of it till now, check out Los Angeles Times Home & Garden’s photo gallery of the one-bedroom rental accommodation near Joshua Tree National Park.

“I’m trying to do something amazing here. I learned as a kid doing my music that you have a right to come up with something brand new,” said Stone to The Times of the retreat that took him three years to build.

And something completely unconventional it is. Its black, minimalist construction seems all the more striking against the stark desert background. Metal roses adorn gate and cinder blocks, mirrors line the ceiling, and a fire pit in the living room may help weather potentially cold nights.

Other amenities included in the four-room place are a spa, barbecue, open-air shower, a king bed and a kitchen equipped with sinks, stove and a refrigerator.

Adventuresome “glampers” — short for “glamorous” campers, according to Stone in The Times report — can rent out the accommodations. The current rate, according to the site, is $200 per night, with a two-night minimum. E-mail info@prettyvacantproperties.com to reserve and request more information about renting.

Rosa Muerta, which means “dead rose” in Spanish, sits on a dirt road and is a 10-minute drive from Joshua Tree National Park. According to Stone’s rental website, once there, you’ll have ample space to use as you wish: “There are few other houses in the area, and the nearest is 600 feet away, so there is a lot of privacy and open desert around. You can crank up your amp or listen to the silence.”
