Gas getaways - hotels only one tank of gas from L.A.

Vibe Agent to the rescue. The hotel search engine with a strong social networking flavor has answered the cries of pump-weary summer travelers. Today’s Los Angeles average is $4.58 for a gallon of regular unleaded and it’s no secret that rising gas prices are keeping travelers of all kinds — including anglers and, yes, cowboys — from hitting the road.

If you are like me and refuse to stay home when you don’t want to, take comfort in knowing there are one-tank gas getaways from L.A. Go ahead, book a hotel, sit by the pool and order room service with the money you’ll save staying closer to home. Vibe Agent suggests hotels from only 44 miles (Newport Beach) to 280 miles away (Laughlin, Nevada) and destinations slightly farther south including Laguna Beach and Carlsbad, and eastern and northern points including Santa Barbara, Palms Springs and San Luis Obispo. Note: They have similar pages for New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Houston and Washington, D.C.

I wish all travel booking sites could tell us the distance in miles and minutes if we requested it. Now to have a gas calculator in the sidebars …
