Free London hotel nights when flying British Airways

Hampton Court, the palace just outside London where Henry VIII once lived, will celebrate the king’s life with festivities such as ghost tours, jousting tournaments and special exhibitions, including one about his famous six wives.

Cheap flights to London can be found in the off-season, but what about hotel discounts? British Airways has brought back their “London for Free” deal — an offer of that gives up to two free hotel nights when you book a round-trip flight through their airline.

Deal tested: I found a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to London (LHR) in March for $551 round trip per person including taxes. That also included two nights in a London hotel, some of which include a continental breakfast (I looked at the President near Covent Garden, Oxford Street and the British Museum). Note: It’s ideal to book the flight and hotel together for availability’s sake. However, if you want to take the two free nights and run to another hotel afterward, make sure to change the dates you’d be staying in the selected hotel. It naturally defaults to the same dates as your trip.

When: Book by Jan. 29 for travel Jan. 27 through March 22, 2009.

Participating London hotels: Royal National, President, Best Western Burns, Jurys Inn Chelsea, Holiday Inn Kensington Forum, Rembrandt, Thistle Euston, Thistle Barbican, Fraser Place Queens Gate Apartments and Holiday Inn Regents Park.

Caveat: Traveling solo? Single travelers are offered one free night. Double occupancy gets two free nights of accommodation. You must book the flight at least seven days in advance and include a Saturday-night stay.
